LinksWare is tracking file paths and names; what happens if the file is moved or renamed, or even both? Obviously LinksWare will not be able to retrieve the file, since it isn’t where it was. We have developed a routine which will try to find the files for you. It will tell you that the file is missing and ask if you wish to find it yourself, or have LinksWare try to find if for you. Selecting manual mode, presents you with a standard open box, as if you had selected Open from the file menu. Select the file to be linked as in adding a link: just double-click on it.
If you choose to have LinksWare find the file, then your hard drive is searched in full. This may take a minute or two. LinksWare will then present you with a special window which contains what it determines is the file you most likely want. In the upper left hand corner will be two buttons, allowing you either to accept this selection and have it relinked or to skip it. If you skip it and there are more possiblities for the lost target file, LinksWare will present them one at a time until none are left or you relink one of the files. LinksWare finds files by checking the creation date and file-type. If you alter these (or some program alters them) the find will fail.
Tips and Hints
LinksWare‚Ñ¢ recognizes and plays AIFF and AIFC (Audio Interchange File Format / Audio Interchange File -Compressed) files. These are the Apple defined file formats. There are other sound formats. To use these, you'll need to convert them into AIFF/AIFC formats. The program which created them can usually do this, as well as several shareware programs. Consider using AIFC, since this is format will take up less space on your disk.
While many users find LinksWare ideal in dealing with their own documents, others desire to “LinksWare-publish” sets of files for friends, or even commercially. Publication for profit requires a modest license fee from us, but not-for-profit institutions may publish with a simple acknowledgement. Individual persons sharing files in a not-for-profit situation may choose to give us credit or not.
We strictly require that you do NOT distribute the LinksWare application with your files. Doing so violates our copyright, and you will be liable for the full retail cost of every such distribution, as well as additional legal and punitive costs under both state and federal laws.
On the other hand, we have provided an application entitled “LinksWare Reader.” You are free to distribute this application as you see fit, if you do so without any changes, including, but not limited to the name of the application. In this way you can provide the full ability to read links which you have established, and not violate any laws in distributing them. LinksWare Reader is simply the LinksWare application without the ability to add or otherwise change the links in the set.
LinksWare will keep most (but not all) of the styling and formating information when it reads in a document. If you are LinksWare-publishing, and have your files in the final format, then there are several options:
1) you can use the files as they are, allowing the LinksWare Reader to do all the work of displaying the linked words.
2) you can use your own word processor to highlight the words you have linked. This will save the time required for LinksWare to display the links, as the styling is set when the document is read in.
3) you can have LinksWare search through the file and perform the highlighting itself. Then use the “Save As...” option from the File menu to save the file in the proprietary format used by LinksWare. This offers the additional benefit of high speed reading, along with pre-highlighted links. However, these files are usually significantly larger than the original files.
